The First Step to Change
How do we normalize the area of mental health and the development of healthy coping behaviors in today’s society?

The more we understand, the less foreign that topic becomes. We have seen how social media can cause its own set of issues with people constantly comparing themselves to the highlight reels of others. However, it has given us access to positive imagery. Mental health advocates and professionals are no longer limited to their offices, and can reach people in a nonconventional way.
Let’s Have the Conversation
Christina Douyon is a Ph.D. Candidate in Counseling Psychology in addition to curating a social media platform that not only inspires, but provides informational content. Each post and Insta Story is jam-packed with bursts of free therapeutic material accessible to everyone. Pages like these are crucial today. Especially for that person who may not feel comfortable speaking to someone.
Men Aren’t Supposed To…
What do we do in a world that doesn’t encourage men to express their emotions? Douyon explains that men are resistant to going to therapy.
“Toxic masculinity has socialized men not to ask for help, and not to show vulnerability. Mental health is not something that you can see. That’s when you feel like you really can’t talk about it because it’s not real, and ‘I just have to power through.’”
Where did that ideology stem from anyway?! Depression and anxiety knows no gender, race, age, or class. Even if you’re not in a state of crisis, some people simply exist in a state of stress. This can absolutely negatively affect you both psychologically and physiologically (more on that later).
Switching It Up
Ultimately, choosing the route of self-care and/or therapy does not mean that something is wrong with you. As a matter of fact, something is 1000% right with you when you choose to become the best version of yourself. Not only are you helping yourself, but you’re doing others that are connected to you a favor. Think about how much better you can serve others, once you get yourself together. As mentioned by Douyon in our conversation regarding mental health, “social support is a legitimate game-changer.” The more we talk about this in our everyday conversation, the more we normalize it.
